Nexium® (Esomeprazole)
Drug Class: Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI)
Indications
Nexium is prescribed for:
- Peptic ulcer disease
- Dyspepsia
- Zollinger-Ellison Disease
It reduces stomach acid by blocking the acid pumps in the stomach lining, providing relief and aiding healing.
Dosage
- Typical starting dose: 40 mg once daily
- Form: Delayed-release tablet
Common Side Effects
- Mild:
- Headache
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Nausea or vomiting
- Flatulence
- Decreased appetite
- Dry mouth
- Abdominal pain
- Less Frequent:
- Rash
- Dizziness
- Nervousness
- Muscle pain or leg cramps
Serious Side Effects
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:
- Low magnesium symptoms:
- Unusually fast/slow/irregular heartbeat
- Persistent muscle spasms
- Seizures
- Severe intestinal condition (Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea):
- Persistent diarrhea
- Abdominal pain/cramping
- Fever
- Blood/mucus in stool
- Severe allergic reactions:
- Rash or itching
- Swelling (face/tongue/throat)
- Severe dizziness
- Trouble breathing
Precautions
- Do not self-treat diarrhea with anti-diarrhea or narcotic medications.
- Always inform your healthcare provider of any ongoing symptoms or new effects.
