Description

What is Saxenda?

Saxenda, containing the active ingredient liraglutide, is a prescription medication designed to aid weight loss. It’s most effective when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. As a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA), Saxenda works by enhancing insulin release from the pancreas, which helps regulate appetite and reduces calorie intake. This medication is also a component of Victoza, used for managing diabetes.

Saxenda is prescribed for adults who are overweight (BMI between 27 and 30) with weight-related medical issues, or those classified as obese (BMI of 30 and above). It can also be prescribed to children aged 12 to 17 who are obese (BMI of 30 and above) and weigh over 132 pounds (60 kg).

Dosage and Administration

Saxenda comes in a prefilled injection pen. Needles, which are sold separately, should be 6mm in length. The medication can be administered at any time of day, with or without food, but it is crucial to maintain at least 12 hours between doses. Establishing a daily injection routine at the same time each day is recommended.

Inject Saxenda under the skin in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, avoiding veins or muscles. Rotate injection sites to prevent discomfort. Typically, patients start with a daily dose of 0.6 mg, gradually increasing to 3.0 mg over four weeks, as directed by their healthcare provider.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, dizziness, abdominal pain, and injection site discomfort. Nausea usually diminishes over time. If side effects persist or worsen, consult your healthcare provider.

Warnings and Serious Risks

  • Thyroid Tumors: In animal studies, liraglutide and similar drugs have been linked to thyroid tumors, including thyroid cancer. Symptoms like neck lumps, hoarseness, swallowing difficulties, or breathing issues should be reported to a physician immediately. Saxenda is not recommended for individuals with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
  • Pancreatitis: Severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or pain radiating to the back may indicate pancreatitis. Discontinue Saxenda and seek medical attention if these symptoms occur.
  • Hypoglycemia: When used with other blood sugar-lowering medications, Saxenda can cause low blood sugar. Symptoms include dizziness, sweating, confusion, blurred vision, and more. Seek emergency care if these symptoms appear.
  • Allergic Reactions: Severe allergic reactions such as facial swelling, breathing difficulties, or rapid heartbeat require immediate medical help.
  • Gallbladder Issues: Symptoms like upper abdominal pain, fever, jaundice, or clay-colored stools should be reported to a healthcare provider.
  • Dehydration: Saxenda may cause nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, leading to dehydration. Drink plenty of fluids and contact a healthcare provider if symptoms persist or fluid intake is difficult.
  • Mood Changes: Severe mood or behavior changes, including suicidal thoughts, should prompt immediate consultation with a healthcare provider.

Saxenda and Diet

For optimal weight loss, Saxenda should be used alongside a healthy diet and lifestyle. Avoid high-sugar and high-fat foods, and be mindful of portion sizes. You might also receive an exclusive WeightWatchers offer to support your weight management journey.

How Does Saxenda Work?

Saxenda helps control appetite and cravings by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone, which regulates blood sugar and hunger signals.

Where to Buy Saxenda

Saxenda is available by prescription. Consult your GP for a referral to a weight loss service. No appointment is needed—complete a brief online questionnaire, and our clinicians will determine if Saxenda is right for you.
