Description
Creon® (Lipase, Protease, and Amylase)
Drug Class: Pancreatic Enzyme Replacement Therapy
Purpose:
Creon® is used to treat Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) and other conditions where the pancreas does not produce enough enzymes to digest food.
Indications
Creon is indicated for:
- Pancreatic insufficiency
- Cystic fibrosis
- Chronic pancreatitis
- Post-pancreatectomy
- Ductal obstructions caused by pancreatic cancer
- Steatorrhea (fat malabsorption syndrome)
- Post-gastrectomy (Billroth II and total)
How It Works
Creon contains three key digestive enzymes:
- Lipase – Breaks down fats into fatty acids.
- Protease – Breaks down proteins into amino acids.
- Amylase – Breaks down carbohydrates into sugars.
The enzymes in Creon help digest food as it moves through the gut, ensuring proper absorption of nutrients.
Administration
- Timing: Take with meals or snacks to allow the enzymes to mix with food.
- Dosage: Follow the instructions provided by the prescribing doctor.
Common Side Effects
- Stomach pain
- Bloating
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Constipation
Rare but Serious Side Effects
- Fibrosing Colonopathy:
A rare bowel disorder reported mainly in children with cystic fibrosis on high doses of pancreatic enzymes. - Severe or Prolonged Abdominal Pain:
Contact your doctor immediately.
Precautions
- Creon is generally well-tolerated when taken as directed.
- If symptoms worsen or unexpected side effects occur, consult a healthcare provider.
- Do not take more than the prescribed dose, as high enzyme levels may increase the risk of complications like fibrosing colonopathy.
Creon provides essential enzyme supplementation for people with EPI or other conditions leading to pancreatic insufficiency, allowing them to digest food and absorb nutrients effectively.
